DESCRIPTION

The proposed Investment Program will improve the transport efficiency and safety on the state highways of Rajasthan, by improving around 2,000km of state highway and major district roads (MDRs) to 2-lane or intermediate-lane standards that meet road safety requirements. The capacity of Rajasthan Public Works Department (PWD) will be improved in its business process of PPP division and a project performance monitoring system. Ultimately the Investment Program will improve the access to social and economic activities in Rajasthan.

PROJECT RATIONALE AND LINKAGE TO COUNTRY/REGIONAL STRATEGY

Rajasthan is the largest state of India covering about 10% of total area of the country and having a population of about 68.6 million, nearly 5% of the total population of India. It is one of the low income states of India, and about 75% of the state's population is rural and mainly depends on agriculture for its livelihood. Per capita development cost in the state is very high due to the widely dispersed population. Road density in Rajasthan is only about 60 km per 100 sq. km, compared to the national average of 110. While under-investment and inadequate maintenance has left many of the State Highways and MDRs in poor condition, the proposed project will support the State Government's initiative to increase focus to better and safer road connectivity and sustainable maintenance.
