Project Description

According to bank's website, the Gotion Power Morocco 10 GWh Electric Vehicle Battery Cell Factory Project is a private-sector green industrialization project in Morocco involving the development of an integrated lithium iron phosphate battery cell gigafactory in the Atlantic Free Zone, approximately 60 km north of Rabat. The first phase covers the design, engineering, construction, ownership and operation of facilities capable of producing up to 10 GWh per year of lithium iron phosphate cells and battery packs for electric vehicles. Subsequent phases are expected to increase production capacity to as much as 100 GWh. The facility is expected to become the first integrated and operational cathode-to-cell battery manufacturing plant in the Middle East and Africa, helping address the regional supply gap in iron-based cathode active materials and battery cells. The project will be implemented by Gotion Nova Energy Morocco S.A., a special-purpose company wholly owned by Gotion Power Morocco S.A. Its ultimate parent company is Gotion High-Tech Co., Ltd., a global manufacturer of lithium iron phosphate batteries and energy-storage systems. The African Development Bank will provide up to EUR 100 million in senior debt from its own resources and will also mobilize additional senior financing in its capacity as lead arranger. The document does not specify the total project cost or the amounts to be provided by the other lenders. The project is supported by an investment agreement signed between Gotion Power Morocco and the Kingdom of Morocco on 6 June 2024.
