According to the project disclosure, the objective of the project is to rehabilitate Kapichira Hydropower Dam for resilient and sustained low-cost power generation. The Kapichira Hydropower Plant on the Shire River supplies about 30 percent of Malawi's electricity. It is the cheapest source of electricity in the country and is crucial for ensuring power system services such as spinning reserve and frequency control, to reduce risk of blackouts in the country.
