Project Description

Under the proposed Partnership on GEF Sustainable Cities - WRI project, WRI will serve as a technical partner to the GPSC and receive GEF financing, administered by the World Bank, to deliver demand-driven knowledge, capacity-building, and peer learning support to participating cities. It will include the following components:Component 1. City Leadership, Knowledge Exchange, and Peer Learning:This component will support Regional City Academies, global meetings and mayoral convenings, and engagement in major international urban and climate events to strengthen city leadership, institutional capacity, and peer learning. Activities will include technical training sessions, expert facilitation, peer exchanges, preparation of synthesis outputs, and communications to disseminate lessons learned and support integrated urban sustainability planning and action.Component 2. Knowledge Products and Learning Dissemination:This component will finance the development and dissemination of analytical reports, case studies, technical guidance, tools, and methodologies, as well as webinars and learning events to share good practices across cities. It will also provide demand-driven technical advisory support through a regional helpdesk function, including expert inputs, technical reviews, stakeholder facilitation, and targeted assistance to support implementation of SCIP child projects, subject to demand and available resources.Component 3. Project Management:This component will finance overall project coordination and implementation support, including activity planning, monitoring and reporting, financial management, and administrative functions required for effective delivery of the grant.Subgrant Arrangement with UNEP:Under the project, WRI will provide a portion of the grant proceeds to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) through a subgrant agreement to implement agreed activities in coordination with WRI and the GPSC. WRI will remain responsible to the World Bank for overall implementation and reporting under the grant.
