According to the Bank’s website, the objective of this project is to strengthen the capacity of cities to design and deliver nature-positive, low-carbon, and circular urban investment through capacity building, knowledge development and exchange.
This partnership initiative will scale the adoption of nature-positive, low-carbon, and circular urban solutions by working with C40. Leveraging C40's strengths, it will equip cities with actionable knowledge, peer learning opportunities, and targeted technical support. By aligning global expertise with local needs, the partnership will help cities strengthen capacity, integrate sustainability into planning and investment pipelines, and accelerate the transition toward resilient, inclusive, and climate-smart urban futures.
Under the proposed Partnership on GEF Sustainable Cities – C40 project, C40 will serve as a technical partner to the GPSC and receive GEF financing, administered by the World Bank, to deliver demand driven knowledge, capacity building, and peer-learning support to participating cities under SCIP.

Environmental and Social Risk: Low
The activities supported by the project will include knowledge exchanges and peer-to-peer learning (GPSC’s Regional City Academies, organization of GPSC’s global meetings and high-level convenings, engagement at major global conferences and communications and the preparation of knowledge products and technical advice. The project will not finance feasibility study or design of any future investments therefore no potential downstream adverse impacts are anticipated. These interventions will not have a physical footprint and will not lead to any adverse environmental or social risks and impacts. There could be risks associated with the employment conditions of staff by C40 for carrying out project activities, potential sexual harassment, and gender discrimination among the project delivery team and beneficiary participants in the potential face to face project activities because of people’s interactions in an office environment. However, these risks are considered low and manageable via adequate adherence to the implementing agencies, policies and due diligence and relevant ESSs.
