Project Description

According to the WB, the PDO is to improve the quality of tourism infrastructure and services, the conditions of natural and cultural heritage sites, and to increase sustainable tourism activity in the Arequipa-Colca corridor.

This project is a pilot to unlock tourism development at the regional level through multi-sector interventions. The project is designed to address the multifaceted challenges and opportunities for tourism in Arequipa through coordinated multisectoral investments aiming at identified gaps in connectivity, public services and tourism amenities and sites. The project recognizes that effective tourism development requires a holistic approach that integrates infrastructure improvements, cultural heritage preservation, and effective destination management and promotion. The project focuses on developing tourism routes between the city of Arequipa and the Colca Valley (in the Arequipa region) through the following four complementary components:Component 1. Improving the quality of selected tourist attractions : 1.1) Develop and improve services in targeted sites and attractions and 1.2) Rehabilitate cultural sites Component 2. Upgrading roads and investing in water, sanitation and health facilities focusing on : 2.1) Upgrading the quality of key roads along the identified tourism routes, and 2.2) Improving the water and sewage systems in towns on the identified tourist routes 2.3) construction of a health center and forest rehabilitation.Component 3. Institutional strengthening. Component 4. Project implementation.
