According to bank's website, the canceled project aims to sustainably boost agriculture growth and create more and better jobs in Punjab’s agri-food sector. This means enhancing the competitive position of Punjab’s agri-food production in line with global and domestic market demand and increased private investments in agribusiness. The Program’s medium-term ambition is to promote stronger inclusion of smallholder farmers into agri-food value chains, while enhancing the climate resilience of their farming systems and ensuring a more sustainable management of natural resources, with a focus on soil health and surface- and groundwater. Consistent with the WBG mission of concentrating on the bottom 40 percent, the PrDO focuses on the smallholder farmers as the core objective for broad-based growth in agriculture. The specific objective is to help smallholders close the productivity gaps with medium- and large-size farmers, especially in wheat production, while strengthening their resilience by fostering diversification into more remunerative and nutritious crops, adoption of climate-smart technologies, and by boosting livestock production (source of savings and incomes, especially for women, source of protein for children, and source of manure for soil health improvement).
