According to the Bank’s website, the Resilience and Adaptation of Communities and Ecosystems in the Wetlands of Sahelian River Basins (RACE-Sahel) is a multinational climate resilience, agriculture, water and environment project implemented by the Climate Commission for the Sahel Region (CCRS) in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Senegal. The project is designed to strengthen the resilience and adaptive capacity of communities and ecosystems in highly vulnerable Sahelian wetlands through an integrated approach combining conservation and sustainable management of fragile wetland ecosystems, sustainable management of agroforestry and fisheries systems, support to regional initiatives on resilience-building, climate risk and disaster management, and project coordination and management. The total project cost is estimated at UA 7.866 million, financed by an ADF Climate Action Window grant of UA 7.106 million and a CCRS counterpart contribution of UA 0.760 million.
The project development objective is to contribute to improving the resilience and adaptive capacity of communities and ecosystems in the wetlands of Sahelian river basins to climate change. More specifically, the project seeks to strengthen the conservation, regeneration and sustainable management of fragile ecosystems; enhance the sustainability and resilience of agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries systems to climate change; and increase the operationality and reach of regional initiatives related to climate resilience, climate risk management and disaster reduction.
