As stated by the AfDB, the development objective of SFNA Project is to Improve food safety and nutrition systems in Member States. The project will accomplish this objective by strengthening institutional environment, technical systems and building the capacities of public and private sector actors particularly smallholder farmers and MSMEs involved in Africa’s agri-food value chain.
The project adopts a value chain approach and focuses on simultaneously addressing food safety and nutrition issues associated with a regional priority food commodity. In the long term, the project will contribute to improving food security and nutrition in Africa. The project is expected to lead to a number of short- and medium-term outcomes:
(i) improved safety and compliance of food and agricultural products;
(ii) improved trade compliance;
(iii) improved nutrition; and
(iv) reduced incidence of diet-related diseases and deaths in the long term.
It has three main components, namely:
(1) harmonisation of food safety standards and capacity building for analysis;
(2) promotion of a culture of food safety, gender and nutrition-sensitive investments, evidence-based advocacy to raise awareness and empower consumers and producers, and integration of sanitary and phytosanitary policies; and
(3) project management.

ACCOUNTABILITY MECHANISM OF AfDB
The Independent Review Mechanism (IRM), which is administered by the Compliance Review and Mediation Unit (CRMU), is the independent complaint mechanism and fact-finding body for people who have been or are likely to be adversely affected by an African Development Bank (AfDB)-financed project. If you submit a complaint to the IRM, it may assist you by either seeking to address your problems by facilitating a dispute resolution dialogue between you and those implementing the project and/or investigating whether the AfDB complied with its policies to prevent environmental and social harms. You can submit a complaint electronically by emailing crmuinfo@afdb.org, b.kargougou@afdb.org, b.fall@afdb.org, and/or s.toure@afdb.org.
