According to bank provided information, the project's objective is to improve the quality of the classified road network and traffic conditions for users in the target areas. Its sector goal is to help promote an efficient and sustainable transport system that will bolster growth and create favourable conditions for the movement of goods and persons in these areas.
The project is designed to promote inclusive growth by improving the quality of the road network, mainly in Tunisia's interior regions. The rehabilitation and maintenance of these infrastructures will contribute to promoting the private sector and local SMEs, as well as creating jobs for young people. It also intends to continue supporting micro-businesses in road maintenance, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the infrastructure and at the same time creating market opportunities for entrepreneurs. This operation will also improve access to regions with high agricultural added value, thus contributing to Tunisia's food security, thanks in particular to the development of value chains supported by the private sector.
The Project's Zone of Direct Influence (ZIDP) comprises the Governorates of Kef, Kasserine, Sousse, Sfax, Kairouan, Siliana and Gafsa. According to the Institut National de la Statistique, in 2022, the study areas will have around 3.2 million inhabitants, distributed as follows: 247,600 inhabitants for the governorate of Kef, 465,000 inhabitants for the governorate of Kasserine, 751,700 thousand inhabitants for the governorate of Sousse, 1026,500 inhabitants for the governorate of Sfax, 601,100 inhabitants for the governorate of Kairouan, 101,148 inhabitants for the governorate of Gafsa, 20,155 and 12,618 inhabitants for the delegations of Krib and Sidi Bourouis in the governorate of Siliana.
