According to bank documents, The objective of the project is to build and operate a Greenfield 12.88 MTPA LNG plant in Mozambique.
The Mozambique Area 1 Project entails the development of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant with a production capacity of 12.88 MTPA, including offshore extraction, pipeline, gas processing and liquefaction facilities, as well as an LNG export terminal, primary infrastructure for domestic gas supply, and other associated facilities. It constitutes the Continent's single largest FDI to-date and the largest project financing in Africa. The sheer volume of gas discovery and expected LNG production will place Mozambique in the third rank of global LNG suppliers. The Project will source gas from the Golfinho-Atum (GA) field within "Area 1," which is located 40 KM off the coast of Mozambique. Area 1 has ~75 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable gas, implying a resource life of ~120 years at the initial production rate of 12.88m tonnes of LNG per year. The Project will supply gas for LNG exports (mainly to Europe and Asia) and domestic consumption, thereby fuelling industrial development in the country and the larger southern Africa region.
