As stated by the AfDB, the Matambo Transmission Line Project is designed to increase the reliability and security of supply and promote regional power systems integration and power trade. It is part of a broader effort by EDM to implement network upgrades permitting the installation and evacuation of additional power generation capacity, thus contributing to the assertion of Mozambique as an energy hub for the region. The project will contribute to the reliability and quality of supply of the transmission grid and also benefit the citizens of SAPP countries through the planned regional projects to be integrated from Matambo substation and direct impact on Malawi and Zambia.
In addition, this project will improve the quality of supply in the Centre and North regions that are home to the greatest part of the ppulaton of Mozambique, contributing to the country’s development. The implementation of the project will also be material towards attaining the overall objective of integrating the country’s power network via a transmission backbone system (i.e., the STE project).
The AfDB categorized the project risks as follows -
Environmental Category: 1
Climate Safeguards Categorization: 2
As stated on the company's website, EDM as a state-owned company was set up in 1977, two year following the Independence of Mozambique. The objective was to establish and operate public service in generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.
