As stated by the AfDB, the Borana Resilient Water Development for Improved Livelihoods Program Phase II aligns to Ethiopia’s Ten-Years Development Plan, A pathway to Prosperity (2021-2030).The Program contributes towards the achievement of the Water Resources Development Plan objectives through development of water resources for economic activities and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, including goal #6 of ensuring access to water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The Program objective is to improve access to climate resilient and gender sensitive integrated and sustainable water and sanitation services by pastoral communities in dryland areas of the Borana area of the Oromia region. Specific objectives include:
(i) improve access of the people to improved water supply5 and sanitation service;
(ii) improve water access for livestock; and
(iii) improve catchment management for reduced degradation.
It will lead to the creation of jobs for both men and women in the affected communities.
The direct beneficiaries are the rural and peri-urban communities in the Borana area. They comprise farmers, low-income households, women, and youth. An estimated additional 35,816 people with a minimum of 50% women will benefit from improved access to basic water supply services, while water services will be provided for an estimated 108,967 heads of livestock.
