Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

As stated by the AfDB, the purpose of the Bank's intervention is to cover urgent and essential needs in terms of rebuilding destroyed agricultural production assets and maternal and child health. The Bank's action will help to mitigate the impact of this natural disaster and prevent a further food crisis in the coming months as humanitarian assistance stocks of food run out. Above all, it will help to ensure rapid socio-economic recovery after 3 to 6 months by rebuilding productive agricultural assets. Reviving production in short-cycle (3-month) agro-pastoral sectors, which are the main source of income for affected households, will help prevent social tensions that could result from a shortage of agricultural products intended for household food security and trade.

The Emergency Aid Project for victims of landslides and flooding in the territory of Kalehe - Bushuhu and Nyamukubu villages in the province of South Kivu is part of the emergency support that the African Development Bank provides to countries in situations of ecological and climatic fragility. Following heavy rains on 2 and 4 May 2023 in Luzira, Bushushu, Chabondo and Nyamukubi in Kalehe Territory, the Lukungula, Kabushungu, Nyamukubi, Chishova and Kanyunyi rivers overflowed their banks, causing massive flooding and mudslides. According to the latest estimates of 13 May from the Provincial Health Directorate (DPS), at least 438 people have been killed, while more than 5,000 are still missing. The Bank's intervention will focus on rebuilding productive agricultural assets for 3,800 households through the following activities: (i) Distribution of agricultural inputs to 3,420 households, including those headed by women, agri-breeders: 61,800 kg of bean seed, 10,200 kg of maize seed, 340,000 Ml of cassava cuttings, 3,420 small agricultural tool kits; (ii) Distribution of livestock inputs to 3,420 households, including those headed by women agri-breeders, including 6,840 head of goat breeding stock, 6,840 head of poultry breeding stock and 6,840 veterinary kits; (iii) Distribution of fishing kits to 380 fishing households: 380 dugout canoes, 380 nets and accessories, 380 life jackets for fishermen; (iv) Technical support for households to set up fields; (v) Awareness-raising workshops for women and men on good agricultural and livestock practices that take into account the protection of biodiversity.
