Burundi, like other countries in the East African Community, has been hard hit by the El Nino phenomenon, with torrential rains triggering landslides, flooding leading to the displacement of populations, and the presence of water in Lake Tanganyika. The city of Bujumbura and the Gatumba region, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, were severely affected.
According to the Bank’s website, the main objective of the Bank Group's emergency aid to Burundi is to improve the living conditions of the populations affected by the flooding around Lake Tanganyika in the areas of health, nutrition, water, hygiene and sanitation. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to improve the affected populations' access to drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, health care and emergency nutritional aid.
The specific objectives are to: (i) ensure the provision of drinking water, hygiene and sanitation services at the Gateri site in Cibitoke province, and (ii) ensure the maintenance of essential health services at the Mubimbi health post, and the strengthening of the health and nutritional capacities of the Martyazo health center and the Isale health district. The emergency aid will also enable affected pregnant and breastfeeding women and children to have access to regular screening, prevention and treatment services for acute malnutrition.
