According to the NDB, seven local municipalities in North West and Limpopo provinces (Moretele, Bela-Bela, Modimolle-Mookgophong, Mogalakwena, Rustenburg, Mose Kotane, and Thabazimbi) are severely affected by water shortages with the water demand currently outstripping the supply by more than 1.6 times.
The proposed Magalies Bulk Water Supply Scheme Project is a critical response to address the above challenge. By extending pipeline networks, enhancing the capacity of existing pipelines, and expanding water treatment facilities, the Project will ensure reliable and sustainable access to drinking water, bridge the supply gap and cater for future demand growth.
The Project comprises the following key components:
The Project’s impact will be enhancing access to clean and reliable water for households of Limpopo and North West Provinces, in line with the key objectives of the National Development Plan and the National Water and Sanitation Master Plan.
As stated on the company's website, Magalies Water Board was established in 1969 in terms of Government Notice 234 of 1969 primarily to supply water needs of platinum mines in the Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. Magalies Water provides water for industries and communities, and in 1996 it extended its water supply services to operate, maintain and supply retail water to select local municipalities and the City of Tshwane Metropolitan.

To learn more about the whistleblower mechanism and how to file a complaint, access this webpage at: https://www.ndb.int/about-us/whistleblowing/.
