According to NDB documents, the project will provide sanitation services in Imphal through the construction of 3 sewerage treatment plants, 21 sewerage pumping stations and a 277 km network of sewerage pipelines. Construction of the sanitation system will result in improved health and living conditions of residents through reduced risk of waterborne and water-related diseases, and reduced pollution of Imphal river. The Project will also enhance institutional capacity in Imphal for the operation and maintenance of the sanitation system.
Imphal, the capital of Manipur, is the most populous urban area in the state. The growth in urban population has led to substantial stress on urban infrastructure in Imphal, including sanitation facilities that are inadequate and require development. The existing sanitation system covers 11 out of the 27 municipal wards of Imphal. The wastewater generated in the city and its peri-urban areas primarily gets discharged untreated into rivers, resulting in unacceptable water quality of the receiving river segments. Thus, there is an urgent need to provide the remaining 16 municipal wards with integrated sanitation services through the Project.
The Project will contribute to the enhanced quality of life of residents of Imphal through access to sustainable sanitation services and reduce pollution of the Imphal river. The Project will contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 (ensuring availability of clean water and sanitation for all), in particular target 6.2 (to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all). The Project may also contribute to SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable) through its cascading effects.

ACCOUNTABILITY MECHANISM OF NEW DEVELOPMENT BANK
The New Development Bank (NDB) does not currently have an independent accountability mechanism to accept complaints related to NDB-financed projects. The Bank does have a whistleblower mechanism that receives complaints about misconduct related to corruption, fraudulent practices and instances of money laundering in projects financed by the NDB and/or against the NDB staff members. To learn more about the whistleblower mechanism and how to file a complaint, access this webpage at: https://www.ndb.int/about-us/whistleblowing
