The region of La Mojana, located in an inland deltaic plain with wetland systems, is one of the poorest and most climate vulnerable in Colombia. The region is affected by intense flooding and prolonged dry seasons which fundamentally affect water availability and the livelihoods of its inhabitants. While floods are part of the dynamic of the wetland, models predict both floods and droughts to become more frequent and intense, surpassing the capacity of infrastructure and ecosystems to provide a buffer.
Scaling up climate resilient integrated water resource management practices will tackle barriers derived from climate change through a number of activities. Systemized knowledge management of the impacts of climate change on water management will enable better planning. Water resource infrastructure and ecosystem restoration will be promoted. Early Warning Systems for climate resilience will be improved. Finally, rural livelihoods will be enhanced through climate resilient agro-ecosystems.
