Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

The Project involves the construction and operation of 33 megaWatt (MW) expansion of an existing 53 MW electric power plant that is located in Rufisque (near Dakar) in Senegal. The Project consists of the installation of two combustion engines, one of which is equipped with a heat recovery system, and a short transmission line of approximately 500 meters in length connecting the expansion units to an existing substation. The main fuel for the entire power plant will be heavy fuel oil. The power plant site is adjacent to a Senegal Electric’s (SENELEC) facility and is located in an industrialized zone near a school and residential community. The plant site is also adjacent to a plot of land which was formerly used by the decommissioned GTI Dakar thermal power plant which was moth-balled for commercial reasons. The new power plant will use the fuel storage tanks installed by the old GTI Dakar power plant.
