Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

According to the Bank's website, this project provides financing to the Republic of North Macedonia for the construction of a large-scale Wastewatwer Treatment Plant in the city of Skopje in order to end the current practice of discharging untreated sewage into the Vardar River. 

The Project has two phases: The first phase is the construction of pre-treatment and biological treatment units, to be concluded by 2030. The second phase is the upgrade of biological treatment processes to include removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, to be completed by 2045. The treated effluent will be discharged into the Vardar River.

The wastewater will be transported to the treatment plant through two wastewater collectors on the left and right bank of the Vardar River, which are being financed by the EU and the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia.

According to the Bank, a public meeting was organised on 5 February 2019 as part of the information disclosure processes at which no substantive questions or comments were received. One private land plot will be acquired through a negotiated settlement to facilitate construction of this project. During the operation of the project there will be emissions from generators, sludge digestion and incineration, some increased noise and visual impacts from the new facility.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will provide a loan of up to EUR 60 million. The European Investment Bank will also provide a loan of up to EUR 60 million.

The loan will be in favour of the Ministry of Finance.
