According to the CDB, the project will set up a reliable and climate-resilient supply of potable water to residents and businesses in the north of Saint Lucia; and enhance management and operational capacity of the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. in the areas of gender inclusion, climate resilience planning, and financial management.
According to the Project Summary:
The expected outcomes of the project are: a reliable and climate resilient supply of potable water to residents and businesses in the north of St. Lucia; and (b) enhanced management and operational capacity in WASCO in the areas of gender inclusion, climate resilience planning, and financial management. The proposed project consists of the following components:
(a) Project preparation studies;
(b) Land acquisition;
(c) Infrastructure works comprising:
(i) Sediment removal and disposal;
(ii) Repairs to spillway and the John Compton Dam access road;
(iii) Development of supplementary water intakes; and
(iv) Installation of dam monitoring instrumentation.
(d) Capacity building of WASCO comprising:
(i) Gender Capacity Building in the Water Sector;
(ii) Climate Vulnerability Assessment and preparation of an adaptation plan;
(iii) Capacity building in the Finance Department;
(e) Tete Chemin Rainwater Harvesting Initiative;
(f) Watershed Restoration Works;
(g) Project management; and
(h) Engineering services.
As stated on the company's website, the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. was first started in 1965 as the Central Water and Authority. Under the portfolio of the Ministry of Health with responsibility for the provision of portable water supplies and conservation, augmentation, distribution and proper use of water resources including preservation and protection of gathering grounds. The Saint Lucia Central Water Authority was constituted under the provisions of the Water Authority Act. No. 24 of 1964.
