Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

As stated by the AfDB, the African Hydropower Modernization Program (AHMP) is part of a programmatic approach aims to encourage private investment in the rehabilitation and modernization of the continent's historic assets. With a total cost of $9.72 million for the extension phase, the program comes at a time when the continent is facing the inadequate performance and ageing of its hydropower fleet, as well as the challenge of having flexible capacity to integrate variable renewable energy production sources such as wind power or solar photovoltaics.

As well as being the beneficiary of financing for the management of the program, the Bank is also acting as sponsor and manager of the program, with a project team made up of experts from three departments of the energy complex.
