As stated by the AfDB, the African Hydropower Modernization Program (AHMP) is part of a programmatic approach aims to encourage private investment in the rehabilitation and modernization of the continent's historic assets. With a total cost of $9.72 million for the extension phase, the program comes at a time when the continent is facing the inadequate performance and ageing of its hydropower fleet, as well as the challenge of having flexible capacity to integrate variable renewable energy production sources such as wind power or solar photovoltaics.
As well as being the beneficiary of financing for the management of the program, the Bank is also acting as sponsor and manager of the program, with a project team made up of experts from three departments of the energy complex.
As stated by the AfDB, the beneficiaries of the African Hydropower Modernization Program (AHMP) are a heterogeneous set of structures operating in Africa, including: i) SN Development B.V., Themis Infra, Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, North South Gurara Energy Company Limited, North South Power Company Limited and Shiroro Solar Generating Company Limited as project promoters, who receive reimbursable grants for project preparation; ii) Bethlehem Hydro (Pty) Limited, Mighty Land Investment Group and Sudanese Hydro Generation & Renewable Energies Co. Ltd as plant owners, who receive grants for plant rehabilitation; and iii) the AfDB as funding recipient for program management.
