According to the Bank’s website, the Chennai Metro Rail Investment Project contributes in the expansion of the existing metro rail network in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, a state on the south-east coast of India. The investment project will develop Lines 3 and 4, connecting the central area of Chennai to key points in the south and west of the city. The second tranche will continue to cover the civil works related to underground tunneling and stations along the Line 4 corridor, and the construction of viaducts along the Line 3 corridor. It also includes planning activities on urban renewal and livability improvement through the attached TA. The remaining tranche will gradually finance the contracts as they progress, and the periodic financing request will be issued based on disbursement projections.
Rapid population growth and economic expansion in the CMA have placed significant pressure on urban infrastructure and mobility systems. Urbanization has driven the city's expansion into suburban areas, increasing average travel distances to central destinations and creating a strong demand for fast, affordable, and convenient transportparticularly for business and commuting trips, which make up over 80% of total travel in the CMA.
