According to the bank document, the Water Efficiency Improvement in Drought Affected Provinces Project aims to modernize irrigation systems in five drought affected provinces of Viet Nam. The modernized systems will enhance the provinces' ability to manage climate variability, improve water productivity of agriculture, and increase incomes of around 39,000 farming households by supporting them to grow high value crops such as coffee, pepper, grapes, apples, dragon fruit and mango.
The project introduces an innovative approach to irrigation modernization in Viet Nam by supporting the development of pressurized piped irrigation systems which provide water on-demand' to meet the level of service required by farmers. The project also adopts high level technology for supervisory control and data acquisition systems to monitor flows throughout the systems and will use remote sensing-based applications to estimate water productivity at the field level.
