Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

According to bank provided information, the project aims to support Bucafe S.U. (“Bucafe”), the Burundi subsidiary of Sucafina S.A., in assessing the feasibility of producing organic bio-fertilizer using coffee pulp and other locally available by-products. The project seeks scalable, climate-smart solutions to improve soil health and increase productivity for smallholder coffee farmers in Burundi. Under this phased engagement, IFC will assist Bucafe in conducting a pre-feasibility review of value-added products that can be derived from coffee pulp, in order to then develop a bankable feasibility study for one or two priority products, with a primary focus on bio-fertilizer production. The project will include agronomic assessments, field trials, supply-chain analysis of raw materials, and recommendations for climate-smart practices. The study is expected to provide Bucafe with a clear operational and financial blueprint to structure a viable bio-fertilizer business.
