The project focuses on enhancing producer training in animal nutrition and climate-smart practices to improve climate resilience and reduce GHG emissions in Alvoar’s supply chain, particularly in Brazil’s Northeast region. It includes developing an animal nutrition strategy and supporting training farms to demonstrate efficient feed production and water conservation techniques. Training will be delivered through workshops, farm visits, publications, and online sessions, with attention to gender inclusion. A pilot program will test GHG emission reduction tools by establishing baseline emissions and providing tailored recommendations to farmers, aiming to scale successful practices. This project is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Canada through the Facility for Resilient Food Systems (FRFS) / Advancing Gender Equality, Resilience, Opportunity, and Inclusion Worldwide (GROW) initiative.
The project aims to support Alvoar in addressing three key challenges: improving animal nutrition and climate-resilient production and monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To achieve this, IFC will train farmers in climate-smart and regenerative agricultural practices, such as alternative forage and resilient crops and animal welfare. A pilot will test tools for measuring GHG emissions, aiming to reduce emission intensity through baseline assessments and tailored reduction strategies.
As stated by the IFC, Alvoar Lacteos (https://alvoar.embare.com.br/) was founded in 2022 as a result of the merger between Betania Lacteos S.A (a leading dairy producer in the Northeast of Brazil, https://www.betanialacteos.com.br/) and Embaré Indústrias Alimentícias S.A. (a dairy producer with strong presence in the Southeast and Midwest of Brazil, https://www.embare.com.br/).
