Project Description

According to the ADB, the Kyrgyz Republic faces critical water supply and sanitation challenges both in rural and urban areas, inefficient wastewater network collection, and growing domestic and industrial wastewater due to the latest migration movements and increase of the economy in multiple rural and urban areas. Untreated wastewater often reaches the river due to lack of treatment or even obsolete abandoned wastewater treatment facilities; this leads to groundwater contamination, riverbed degradation, and environmental risks. A 2022 study developed by the Community Development and Investment Agency (ARIS) indicates that just in the Jalal-Abad region at least 31 villages totaling 74,000 inhabitants need updated or upgraded water supply and sanitation facilities, and the Jalal-Abad Water Supply and Sanitation Development Program will address those needs.
