According to the Bank’s website, the proposed TA responds to the Government of Bangladesh's request to provide support for the implementation of the South Asia Economic Corridor: Chattogram-Dohazari Railway Project.
The Dhaka, Chattogram Cox's Bazar corridor serves as a vital rail link in Bangladesh, connecting the nation's capital, its principal port city, and a prominent tourist center. This corridor carries a significant share of national railway traffic, with 32% of passengers and 55% of freight, underscoring its importance for both economic development and logistics. The Chattogram city, with a population of about 3.2 million, acts as a key industrial and logistics hub supporting international trade.
A strategic railway modernization and upgrading process institutionalized. It is expected to improve the railway transport system in the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar corridor by strengthening rail connectivity along Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Corridor which forms part of the Trans-Asia Railway network. The project supports a shift from road to rail, thereby increasing the railway's share as a core mode of transportation.
