According to the Bank’s website, the project aims to assist the government of Pakistan in strategically identifying and planning an investment project in the railway sector, using ADB's Project Readiness Facility (PRF).
Pakistan's vast geography makes railways especially suitable for economic development. The country stretches over 1,700 km from north to south, with major cities such as Karachi, Multan, Lahore, and Islamabad. Long-distance freight routes from Karachi Port in the south to Peshawar in the north (over 1,400 km) and cross-border corridors to Central Asia highlight the importance of cost-efficient transport. Compared to roads, rail can move large volumes of freight and passengers more economically and with lower emissions, making it critical for reducing logistics costs, improving regional trade, and supporting inclusive growth.
The financing amount is $10,000,000, which will be financed on a loan basis by ADB’s ordinary capital resources.
Pakistan Railways is the state-owned railway operator in Pakistan. Founded in 1886 as the North Western State Railway and headquartered in Lahore, it owns 7,789 kilometres (4,840 miles) of operational track across Pakistan, stretching from Peshawar to Karachi, offering both freight and passenger services, covering 479 operational stations across Pakistan.

ACCOUNTABILITY MECHANISM OF ADB
The Accountability Mechanism is an independent complaint mechanism and fact-finding body for people who believe they are likely to be, or have been, adversely affected by an Asian Development Bank-financed project. If you submit a complaint to the Accountability Mechanism, they may investigate to assess whether the Asian Development Bank is following its own policies and procedures for preventing harm to people or the environment. You can learn more about the Accountability Mechanism and how to file a complaint at: http://www.adb.org/site/accountability-mechanism/main.
