Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

As stated by the ADB, the technical assistance (TA) will support Kazakhstan's objectives toward emission reduction and renewable energy development. The proposed TA will undertake various studies and tests to prepare options for potential full-scale rehabilitation of the Almaty Hydropower Plant Cascade, the oldest hydropower plants (HPPs) in the country. The refurbished Cascade will provide clean energy supply to the largest city and ancillary services to the southern grid necessary for stability and integration of new renewable energy generation sources.

The TA was requested by the Ministry of Energy (MOE) and state Joint Stock Company Almaty Electric Power Station (ALES). The TA will help the government of Kazakhstan in its preparation of an infrastructure investment projects to support the road map on priority measures to increase the flexibility of Kazakhstan's power system. signed between the MOE, the power system operator Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company (KEGOC) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 29 May 2024.

JSC "AlES" was created on the basis of the decision of JSC "KazTransGas" No. 92 dated 23.05.2006 and was registered on 01.06.2006. The state registration number of the legal entity is 78188-1910-JSC. Currently, the company is part of the group of companies of JSC "Samruk-Energo". The organizational structure of JSC "AlES" includes 8 production units.
