Project Description

As stated by the ADB, based on the request from the Water Committee, the TA will support the Government of Armenia in assessment of the potential for reusing discharged water from aquaculture for irrigation alongside water accounting and productivity analysis, addressing technical feasibility, governance frameworks, and socio-economic and environmental sustainability. Currently, over 200 aquaculture sites in the valley consume more than 30 million cubic meters (m3) of water annually. The surplus water is being discharged to the Araks River through a network of canals and collectors instead of being recycled or reused. The Ararat Valley presents an opportunity to develop modernized irrigation infrastructure with water treatment powered by solar photovoltaic to divert discharge water from aquaculture into upstream irrigated areas.
