Project Description
If provided by the financial institution, the Early Warning System Team writes a short summary describing the purported development objective of the project and project components. Review the complete project documentation for a detailed description.

According to the bank disclosure statement,  the project focuses on 10 priority coastal sites identified by the Government of Kerala as critically vulnerable to erosion, flooding, and climate-related hazards, under project loan modality. These include Shangumugham, Alappad, Kodungallur, Ponnani, Thalassery, Varkala, Vypeen, Kappad, Valiyaparamba, and Allappuzha. At each location, coastal dynamics are influenced by wave-driven sediment transport, monsoonal drift patterns, estuarine systems, and infrastructure-induced disruption of littoral processes. Preliminary feasibility studies and numerical modelling, including work conducted by the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), are informing site-specific protection strategies. Proposed solutions include hybrid interventions combining curved seawalls, groynes, offshore breakwaters, and beach nourishment, with designs tailored to local geomorphology and community needs. The project will give priority to approaches that reduce wave overtopping and inundation, restore beach buffers, and integrate nature-based elements where feasible.
