According to the Bank’s website, this TA will support undertaking assessments of long-term climate risks at the four atoll nations and the development of a high-level portfolio of transformational adaptation options and pathways at each atoll nation which will inform the further development of the AAS4A program.
The four atoll nations of Kiribati, Maldives, Marshall Islands, and Tuvalu with their low-lying topography, in average two meters above sea level, and fragile ecosystems, are particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Recent studies have shown that, without adaptation, climate change would amplify present direct economic damages from coastal flooding in small island developing states (SIDS) by more than 14 times under high-emissions scenarios, with atoll nations being among the countries experiencing the highest losses. Keeping global warming below 1.5 degree Celsius could avoid almost half of unmitigated damage, depending on the region. Achieving this climate target, however, would still not prevent several SIDS from suffering economic losses corresponding to considerable shares of their gross domestic product, leading to forced migration from low-lying coastal zones.

ACCOUNTABILITY MECHANISM OF ADB
The Accountability Mechanism is an independent complaint mechanism and fact-finding body for people who believe they are likely to be, or have been, adversely affected by an Asian Development Bank-financed project. If you submit a complaint to the Accountability Mechanism, they may investigate to assess whether the Asian Development Bank is following its own policies and procedures for preventing harm to people or the environment. You can learn more about the Accountability Mechanism and how to file a complaint at: http://www.adb.org/site/accountability-mechanism/main.
