According to the Bank’s website, the proposed Technical Assistance (TA) aims to strengthen the capacity of the Maharashtra government and governments in other selected states, to provide better access to and deliver affordable tertiary medical care in public hospitals and government medical colleges, with the ultimate objective of reducing the incidence of catastrophic OOPE and enhancing the quality. Key activities include-(i) Development of strategies and action plan to improve and upgrade existing tertiary care hospitals to medical colleges, (ii) Identification and implementation of policy actions for improving medical education and their implementation, (iii) Capacity building of the States, National Medical Commission (NMC), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India for medical education and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The TA financing amount is $2 million, which will be financed on a grant basis by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR) and administered by ADB. The government will provide counterpart support in the form of counterpart staff, office space and other in-kind contributions.
