According to the Bank’s website, the project will support the Government of Indonesia to meet its transport sector priorities and national agenda to enhance the economic growth of Java Island by improving national and rural connectivity. The project will (i) construct approximately 72 kilometers (km) of climate-resilient roads in the southsouth Java road corridor; (ii) improve capacity of the Directorate General of Highway (DGH) under the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) in climate change resilience, protection of wildlife habitat, and safeguards implementation; and (iii) improve road safety. The project plays a critical role in fostering economic growth, promoting tourism, and reducing inequalities in South Java, particularly in the southern corridor. Moreover, it will improve transportation efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the region's resilience to climate-related challenges.
The proposed project is a new road formation involving significant resettlement impacts associated with acquisition of private and government land. Land acquisition will result in physical and/or economic displacement of affected persons. Resettlement surveys and consultation are being carried out to identify the potentially affected persons and the type and scale of resettlement impacts that will be required as part of safeguard due diligence during project preparation.
