The proposed investment in ZZ2 Beherend Pty Limited is to finance expansion of avocado production, expansion of tomato production in net houses, investments in solar energy for its farm operations and refinance part of its existing debt.
As stated on the project disclosure page, IFC’s proposed investment package comprises of:
(i) Senior A loan of ZAR 900m (US$52m) in Bertie van Zyl Pty Limited (ZZ2’s subsidiary); and
(ii) redeemable non-convertible preference shares (“preferred equity”) of ZAR 100m (US$5.8m) in ZZ2.
As stated on the company's website, the ZZ2 Group of companies are owned by the Van Zyl family who started their farming operations more than a hundred years ago. ZZ2 farms mainly in the Limpopo Province where our sought-after tomatoes and avocados are cultivated, but we also operate in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, North-West Province, Mpumalanga and Namibia. We also grow mangoes, onions, dates, cherries, apples, pears, stone fruit and almonds.
ZZ2 is owned by Bertie Van Zyl Trust (95%) and Amsodebe Trust (5%).
