As stated by the AfDB, the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project (LTWP) is of significant strategic benefit to Kenya, and one of the largest private investments in Kenya’s history. It aims to provide 300MW of reliable, low cost wind energy to the national grid, equivalent to over 20% of the current installed electricity generating capacity. The wind farm site is located in Marsabit District in northern Kenya, approximately 50km north of South Horr Township and 8km east of Lake Turkana. The project will comprise a wind farm, associated overhead electric grid collection system and a high voltage switchyard. The project also includes rehabilitation of the existing road from Laisamis to the wind farm site, a distance of approximately 200km, as well as plant and equipment lay-down areas, and access road network in and around the site for construction, operations and maintenance purposes.
The major aim of the project is to substitute a generation of clean and low cost energy from more expensive plants operating on imported diesel and fuel oil, increase employment of local labor during the construction phase, and upgrade the rural road network, significantly improving access to markets and business opportunities for the local communities, and consequently catalyzing additional jobs and income-generation opportunities in this poor and remote area. The project’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program will support investments in the local health facilities, potable water supply and school buildings. Building on its integrated approach to infrastructure development, the Bank’s ultimate aim is to establish Kenya in particular and East Africa in general, as an ideal place for business and investment through adequate energy supply capabilities.
As stated on the company's website, LTWP is connected to the Kenyan national grid through a 438km associated transmission line constructed by the Government of Kenya through the Kenya Transmission Company (KETRACO).
As stated on the company's website (consulted on August 21, 2025), four shareholders own LTWP, namely: Anergi Turkana Investments Limited, Osprey Renewables Africa, CFP UK Holdings Limited and Sandpiper Ltd.
